10U Brooklands vs High Legh Green Summer League
By Angela Cuddy
A fabulously close victory.....
High Legh were the Green Team's final fixture in one of the most difficult boxes I have ever seen. High Legh won the Green Winter League so we were prepared for an exceptionally strong team.
They arrived at Brooklands with a slightly different line up than we expected, but we could see as they warmed up that they were still very strong throughout.
Joseph, Oliver, Andrew & Mags made up the team today with Joseph & Oliver starting with singles and Andrew & Mags with the doubles.
Joseph has been out for 4 weeks with a broken right hand, today was only the second day since that he's been fit to play so I was a bit worried about how he'd get on. I needn't have been, he played superbly and after a very close first set he stormed the second 4-1.
Oliver had a very tight match and played some sublime forehands but just lost out in the end.
Andrew and Mags had the best result though, with a comprehensive 4-2, 4-1 win in the doubles. So we were 2-1 up after the first round...
Mags got underway with her singles first after a short break. She battled hard against some difficult short balls and came good in straight sets, bagging us one more rubber.
Andrew's singles match was a tough one, he played so well, in his usual attacking manner, with some fabulous ground strokes and smashes. I really thought he'd get the result but, after drawing one set all, he lost out in the tie break decider. It was a tough loss for him but he has to take the positives from the way he played.
Joseph and Oliver had to win their doubles to avoid a shoot out now and started really well, going 2-0 up in the first set, but they lost their way a little in the middle and by the time they found their rhythm again it was too late. They never stopped pushing until the end though, and we thought they may sneak the second set at one point, but not today.
So that meant a shoot out to decide the fixture. Joseph and Andrew stepped up for us, they haven't played doubles together for over a year, so I wasn't sure how cohesive they'd be, but then that's the beauty of a shoot out, you get pairs that don't normally play together. The boys played really nicely together, they moved like a proper doubles team. I counted 3 switches manoeuvred perfectly in one rally alone. Their good play was rewarded with a 10-6 victory and that meant victory for the team overall.
It was a great way to end the Summer season, the team have done themselves proud in a ridiculously difficult box. My thanks and congrats goes out to all our Green Team players this season:
Joseph Cuddy, Alex Kukharuk, Oliver Bodey, Andrew Stephenson, Mags Wilton & Tom Snell.
