8U Brooklands vs Poynton Red Winter League
By Angela Cuddy
Final win secured to put the 8Us through to the Winter League semi finals!!
What a beautiful day to play tennis, such a stark contract to the sideways rain and wind of the other Winter League matches!
Brooklands 8Us needed one more win to secure a place in the play offs. We knew that Poynton were a strong side but we also knew that our boys were up for the challenge. Gabriel, Elijah, Thomas and Bodhi represented Brooklands, a very strong team with a lot of competitive experience, but could we snatch this last win?
After the first round we knew we stood a great chance, we had four home wins under our belt. Gabriel had played their number one seed in the first round and it was a marathon of a match!! No one could believe what they were seeing, the tennis was unreal, going back and forth, with slice shots, drop shots and awesome cross court rallies. Both boys had numerous match points, but Gabriel was just that bit stronger and held his nerve to secure us a win at 22-20!!!!!!! It really was red tennis at its best.
The second round saw us gain 4 more home wins, Elijah capitalising on their number one seed coming out the wrong side of such a tough match and Gabriel, Thomas and Bodhi grinding out their own victories too.
After that we only lost 2 rubbers, winning the match 14-2.
I like to call out special performances each time the team play, obviously Gabriel's marathon deserved a special mention, but all the team have been awesome too. Elijah and Gabriel are both unbeaten this Winter League which is incredible, especially in such a short format of the game. Thomas has been out of action since October last year with a very badly broken arm, this was his first competitive match back and he was just great. Then we have Bodhi, this is his first season playing competitively and he's just slotted himself into the team with wins aplenty! After the match they just hung around together and chatted, swapping Match Attax and giggling together, it was so good to see.
Can you tell we're proud of them?.... We really are! Lindsey and I have both thoroughly enjoyed captaining this team. Semi finals await, but we've just told the team it's "one more match" to keep the pressure off, what will be will be, but if they play like today, we stand a very good chance!!!
